About Vihiga Agriculture

We are an intiative of Vihiga County's Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives.

The department's mandate is to create an enabling environment for sustainable development and management of crops, livestock, fisheries resources and cooperative movement to ensure the county’s Food and Nutrition security for improved livelihoods.

How We Operate

The Department of Agriculture in Vihiga County currently discharges its functions through these 6 directorates:

This directorate handles all matters agriculture that are not covered by the other directorates.
This directorate categorises crop production into industrial, food & horticultural crops.
Animal production accounts for nearly 40 percent of the employment opportunities.
This directorate exists to ensure safe and healthy livestock and livestock products.
The County has about 1000 active fish farmers operating about 1200 fish ponds.
Vihiga has a total of 95 cooperative societies spread through various sectors.
The department's single overarching goal is to promote an innovative, commercially-oriented, and modern agricultural sector.
